If you've spent any time in Hyrox circles lately, you've probably seen the clips: an athlete mid-race, giving it everything on the run leg, when their gut suddenly stages a very public, very unscheduled protest. It's become something of a dark meme in the community — equal parts cringe and cautionary tale. Nobody signs up for a Hyrox heat hoping to become a highlight reel for the wrong reasons, but it happens more than the sport likes to admit, and there's real physiology (and real supplement mistakes) behind it.

So before you laugh it off as bad luck, let's talk about why the gut, of all organs, is the one that stages a coup during an all-out 60-to-90-minute effort — and how a cheap tub of magnesium or the wrong energy gel can turn you into the next cautionary Instagram Reel.

The gut under race stress

During intense exercise, the body redirects blood flow away from the digestive organs and toward working muscles, a phenomenon known as splanchnic hypoperfusion. Blood flow to the gut can drop by as much as 80% during high-intensity effort. In plain terms: your intestines are trying to process whatever you fed them an hour ago with almost no staff on shift, while also getting shaken around like a snow globe through sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, and running. Add heat, dehydration, and race-day adrenaline, and your gut becomes the single most fragile system in your body — a ticking time bomb that a bad supplement choice can set off early.

Suspect number one: cheap magnesium oxide

Magnesium shows up in half the pre-workouts and electrolyte mixes on the market, because it genuinely helps with muscle function and nerve signaling. The catch is that not all magnesium is created equal, and the cheapest form to manufacture — magnesium oxide — is also famously bad at actually getting absorbed, with bioavailability often cited around a measly 4%. Translation: almost none of it goes where it's supposed to. Instead, it sits in your gut and pulls in water through osmosis. This is, not coincidentally, the exact mechanism behind most over-the-counter laxatives. Take it on a lazy Sunday and it's a non-event. Take it an hour before a Hyrox heat, while your intestines are already starved of blood flow and being bounced around by wall balls, and you've essentially self-administered a laxative right before showtime. Suspect number two: the wrong carbs

The second usual suspect is carbohydrate choice. Fast-digesting carbs are genuinely useful for topping up glycogen and blood sugar mid-race — the problem is that "fast" doesn't mean "gut-friendly," and those two get mixed up constantly. High-fructose sources are a particular menace when taken alone, because fructose is absorbed through a separate, limited-capacity transporter in the gut. Overload it, and the unabsorbed fructose sits there, ferments, and pulls in water — same osmotic chaos as the magnesium problem, different ingredient. If you're choosing a race-day carb source, cyclic dextrin beats a fructose-heavy gel every time your intestines have a vote.

Why it never happens in training

Here's the twist that catches people out: the exact same gel or magnesium tablet that felt totally fine on a chill Tuesday training session can turn into a five-alarm gut emergency on race day. Training doesn't have the adrenaline, the dehydration, or the all-out intensity that redirects blood flow away from your intestines. Race day stacks every risk factor at once, which is exactly why a "harmless" pre-workout habit can suddenly become the thing people are still talking about a year later.

How to not become the next cautionary clip

The fix is refreshingly unglamorous: read labels instead of trusting marketing copy. Favor magnesium bisglycinate  over oxide if gut comfort matters to you. For race fuel, look for a cyclic dextrine blend , and — this cannot be said enough — never try anything new on race morning. Test everything, repeatedly, at race intensity, in training first. And give your gut some breathing room: skip big doses of concentrated carbs or minerals in the final 30 minutes before your heat, when blood flow is already being rerouted to your legs and not your intestines.
